Trezor.io/Start® | Starting™ Up Your Device
Secure your assets from the very first moment
Welcome. This presentation guides you through the first-time setup and best practices for a Trezor hardware wallet. It explains what to expect during initialization, how to protect your recovery seed, and how to integrate your device with wallet software.
Why choose a hardware wallet?
Cold security for private keys
A hardware wallet stores private keys offline, reducing exposure to malware and phishing attacks. Trezor isolates signing operations so that sensitive material never leaves the device.
- Air-gapped protection of private keys
- Open-source firmware and strong community review
- Recoverable via seed phrase
What you'll need
Prepare these items before you start
- Trezor device and original USB cable
- A desktop or laptop with a modern browser
- Secure, private space to write down the recovery seed
- Patience — set aside 15–20 minutes
Avoid connecting in public Wi-Fi environments and do not install untrusted browser extensions during setup.
Step 1 — Connect and open Trezor.io/Start®
Initial connection
Visit Trezor.io/Start® to begin. The website detects your device, verifies firmware authenticity, and guides you to install any required app or bridge.
Always confirm the real site URL and SSL certificate to avoid phishing: official paths and verified links are essential.
Step 2 — Firmware & authenticity
Verify and update
Trezor will prompt if firmware must be updated. Firmware updates improve security and features; follow on-screen prompts and verify the device’s screen messages match the host.
- Do not use unofficial firmware
- Check device display for any unexpected prompts
Step 3 — Create your recovery seed
Most important step
The recovery seed (24 words) is the ultimate backup for your funds. Write it down on the provided card, store copies in secure, separate physical locations, and never share it digitally.
- Write legibly and double-check word order
- Consider using tamper-proof metal backup for long-term storage
- Never photograph or save the seed on cloud services
Step 4 — Set a strong PIN and optional passphrase
Layered defenses
A PIN protects against local access, while a passphrase can act as an additional secret, creating a hidden wallet. Use unique, memorable PINs and keep the passphrase secret like your seed.
Step 5 — Use with wallet software
Accounts & transactions
After setup, connect Trezor to your preferred wallet (Trezor Suite or compatible third-party wallets). Always review and confirm the transaction details on the device screen before approving.
- Verify addresses on the device display
- Check amounts and recipient address carefully
Maintenance & best practices
Keep your device healthy
Periodically check for firmware updates, avoid untrusted apps, lock your device when not in use, and keep spare backups of your recovery seed in secure places.
Emergency plan: store one backup with a trusted friend or secure deposit box.
